From Humble Beginnings to Impactful Change: The Story of Neechie Gear

I remember vividly the moment I first stepped onto a stage to share my story. The host called out, “Kendal Netmaker, come on up.” My heart raced, and I could feel sweat forming on my forehead. Despite the nerves, I walked up to the stage with only my story to share.

“Hello, ladies and gentlemen, my name is Kendal Netmaker. I’m the founder and CEO of Neechie Gear, a lifestyle apparel brand that empowers youth through sport,” I began. “We sell men’s and ladies’ T-shirts, hoodies, and more. But our mission goes beyond apparel. We are committed to donating a portion of our profits to help underprivileged youth participate in sports.”

I shared a personal anecdote that has shaped my journey and the mission of Neechie Gear. “When I was in grade five, a childhood friend from South Africa and his family, who had immigrated to Canada, took me under their wing. They paid for my soccer fees, enabling me to play a sport I loved but couldn’t afford. By grade seven, this generous family even gave us the keys to a vehicle they no longer needed. This was our first family car, and it allowed my mom to drive me and my siblings to games and practices. Their kindness empowered me through the gift of sport. This experience showed me the profound impact a helping hand can have, potentially changing lives.”

I paused, letting the story sink in before continuing, “Inspired by this generosity, I founded Neechie Gear to pay it forward. We sell T-shirts and other apparel to support underprivileged youth, giving them the same opportunities I had.”

That was all I had that day—a heartfelt story of gratitude and purpose. Over the years, I have shared different versions of this story, each time reminding myself and others why Neechie Gear exists. Since its inception in 2010, we have grown from a small operation in my apartment, where I screen-printed designs on my kitchen table, to a recognized brand.

In those early days, my son, just a baby, would crawl around watching me work. My wife was studying to become a teacher, and we didn’t have much money. But we had a drive—a drive to succeed and make a difference.

Today, Neechie Gear continues to grow, fueled by the same spirit of empowerment and community that started it all. Our mission remains clear: to use the power of sport to uplift and inspire underprivileged youth, just as I was once uplifted.

From those humble beginnings to where we are now, every step of the journey has been guided by the belief in the transformative power of sport and the importance of giving back. This is the heart of Neechie Gear, and it is why we will continue to strive for greatness, one T-shirt at a time.
