Stories Help Messages Get Embedded Into Our Subconscious Mind.

Stories That Transform Us

How Indigenous Leaders Use Stories as a Teaching Moment that Gets Embedded Into Our Subconscious Mind.

“Embrace the Power of Storytelling”

It fills me with gratitude share the timeless wisdom that has shaped my life. As I embark on this journey of storytelling, I carry with me the teachings passed down from generations before me. Growing up in Sweetgrass First Nation near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, storytelling wasn’t just a tradition; it was the cornerstone of our education.

From a young age, I was immersed in a world where elders spoke, and we listened, seated on the floor, captivated by their words. Each story was not merely entertainment but a vessel of knowledge, carrying profound lessons that would shape our character and guide us through life’s journey. The power of storytelling lies not only in the narratives themselves but in the transformative impact they have on our minds and souls.

Reflecting on my upbringing, I realize the significance of storytelling in preserving culture, instilling values, and fostering resilience. Every tale had a purpose—a moral woven seamlessly into the fabric of the narrative. These teachings were not imposed but gently imparted, allowing us to internalize them and carry them forward, like sacred gifts passed from one generation to the next.

As I stand here today, I am reminded of the importance of storytelling in our professional lives. Whether we work in education, healthcare, or any other field, our ability to communicate effectively relies on our capacity to share our stories authentically. It is through storytelling that we bridge the gap between knowledge and understanding, fostering empathy, and building meaningful connections with those around us.

In a world inundated with data and information, storytelling remains a potent tool for making sense of the complexities of human experience. It transcends cultural boundaries, speaking to the universal truths that bind us all together as members of the human family. By embracing the art of storytelling, we honor our ancestors’ legacy and ensure that their wisdom continues to illuminate our path forward.

My goal today is simple yet profound: to empower each of you to embrace the storyteller within. As you leave this gathering and return to your respective fields, may you carry with you the courage to share your own story—the story that only you can tell. Whether it’s a tale of triumph or adversity, joy or sorrow, your experiences have the power to inspire, educate, and transform the lives of those around you.

In closing, I invite you to reflect on the stories that have shaped your journey thus far. Embrace them, celebrate them, and above all, share them with the world. For in each story lies the potential to spark hope, ignite change, and remind us of the profound interconnectedness of all living beings.

Thank you.
